Hotel Discount Information

Local, national and international hotels may offer discounted rates for University business-related travel.   

It is recommended that when making reservations it be asked if that particular hotel location offers a better or discounted rate for:

  • An “educational institution” and/or The Ohio State University; or,
  • “State-government” given that the University is an instrumentality of the State of Ohio; or,
  • The host institution that is being visited and/or conference being attended; and,
  • What, if any, documentation (ex. OSU ID, conference materials) is required at check-in for the discounted rate to be applied.

Also, at the time of reservation, it should be noted that the University is sales tax-exempt and documentation can be provided at check-in.  At times, if the reservation is noted “tax-exempt” prior to check in/out it may lessen the need to remind the reservation desk.

Some hotels may offer discounts for personal travel based upon University affiliation (faculty, staff and student).  Travelers can inquire if a hotel offers personal travel discounts and should verify whether documentation is required to substantiate affiliation with University.  It is prohibited that the University’s tax exemption status be used in conjunction with personal travel.
