B20 BioDiesel + 3 Million Rides per Year = CABS Makes a Difference!

Entire CABS Transit Fleet Now Powered by Soy BioDiesel.
Transportation & Parking Services is proud to announce that as of Autumn Quarter 2006, the entire CABS fleet will be powered by Soy Biodiesel (B20) fuel. This decision came after a multi-year pilot program, started in 2003, produced promising results.
Soy Biodiesel is a cleaner-burning alternative to traditional petroleum diesel. It is made from renewable resources: soybean oil and animal fats. The mixture T&P is running--B20--is made up of 80% diesel fuel and 20% soybean oil. The use of this fuel has benefits for the University and the larger community. Scientists believe that carbon dioxide is one of the main greenhouse gases that contribute to the global warming effect. The B20 blend reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 15 percent. It also lessens carbon monoxide, particulate and sulfur dioxide emissions, which have all been targeted as public health risks by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The original program and the decision to begin the testing of Soy Biodiesel in the buses is the result of Transportation & Parking’s commitment to the University’s Academic Plan by partnering University services with Academics. The use of this fuel on campus helps facilitate learning and research opportunities in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences and the Center for Automotive Research. This initiative also supports Ohio’s agricultural sector by using Ohio’s soybean crop. Since CABS provides millions of rides annually, T&P hopes that this will increase awareness of students, staff, and faculty to domestically produced fossil fuel alternatives.
